Sarcophagus Scale

Sculpture
Sarcophagus Scale is a sculptural elaboration based on the story of Dr. Duncan MacDougall, who experimented with weighing people at the time of their death. This was the source of the 21 grams concept. His intention presumably was to find scientific proof of the soul, but to me these experiments demonstrated a desperate attempt to validate his own insecurities about death. This has been an ongoing theme for me to explore how belief is shaped our desire to validate what we wish to believe, and disavow what we find intolerable.
